As one of Twitter’s newest features, Twitter Spaces allows you to listen to live audio chats. Anyone with a Twitter account can join the Twitter Space and you can do it on different devices. Once you’ve joined a Twitter Space, you can interact with other members of that Space, pin Tweets, turn on captions, and participate in a variety of ways.
In this guide, we will show you how to listen to Twitter Spaces. We’ll also answer some frequently asked questions about this Twitter feature.
If you want to use Twitter Spaces, then you can do it as a host or as a guest. If you want to start Twitter Space, you can only do so with the mobile app. However, to simply join another user’s Twitter Space, you can also use the web app and desktop app.
Since Twitter Spaces are public, anyone can join. In other words, you don’t need to follow a Twitter account to join their Twitter Space. Currently, there are three ways you can join other people’s Twitter Spaces: through Groups, Tweets, and links. Since Fleet is only available on the mobile version, we will show you how to listen to Twitter Space using the other two methods.
To listen to Twitter Space on Twitter web/desktop app, follow the steps below:
Note: This method can be used for Windows, Mac, and Chromebooks.
The Twitter space you just joined will appear to the right of your Twitter home page. If you want to join a Twitter Space where a specific topic is being discussed, enter “filter: space topic” (e.g. news, sports, fashion, etc.).
The Twitter mobile app offers more features when it comes to Twitter Spaces. While anyone can listen to Twitter Spaces, to be a Twitter Space host you must have at least 600 followers.
If you want to join the Twitter Space, you can join as a listener or speaker. When you join the Space yourself, you can join as a listener. However, you can also react to emojis, check out another speaker’s or pinned presenter’s Tweet, and enable subtitles.
If you want to participate as a speaker, you need to get permission to become a speaker. To do this, tap “Request” below your microphone in the bottom left corner of the Space. Only the organizer can grant you permission to be a presenter. The presenter also has the option to invite you as a speaker. In that case, you will be asked: “How would you like to participate?” You can tap the “listener” or “speaker” button.
To listen to Twitter Space on iPhone, follow the steps below:
If you have received an invite link from the host in your inbox, do the following:
That’s all there is to it. When you want to leave Space, all you have to do is tap the “Leave” button in the upper right corner.
Joining the Twitter Space on an Android device is not equally complicated. Follow the steps below to learn how:
If someone has started a Twitter Space, their profile picture will have a purple border. It can be a profile picture or two merged bubbles. Occasionally, a Space host will share their Space link in a Tweet. If it appears on your homepage, you can simply click the link to join.
You can only listen to Twitter Spaces that are currently active. The moment the server decides to end Space, it will disappear from the Fleet and search results pages. Twitter creates audio copies of all your Spaces, as well as subtitles, which are kept for 30 days. They are then permanently deleted.
Although the listener cannot access the Ended Spaces, the server has the option to download the Spaces to their device. This can only be done with the Twitter data download tool. If someone sends you a link to their Twitter Space, you’ll also be able to see its status – whether the Space is currently active, scheduled, or ended.
As a listener, you don’t have the option to speak in Twitter Spaces. However, you can react to the live chat. To express your opinion on the current topic, you can react with an emoji. Unfortunately, you only have five emojis to choose from.
If you can’t hear the conversation clearly, you have the option to turn on subtitles. While they can be a great help, they can prevent you from seeing the names of other participants. While listeners can choose whether or not they want to see subtitles, only the presenter and presenter can provide them.
If you’ve joined the Twitter Space as a speaker, or if you’ve been given permission by the organizer to be a speaker, you have many other options. You can choose to mute and unmute your microphone, pin a Tweet to a Space, and share a Space via a Tweet or an invite link.
On the other hand, Twitter Space servers can control the entire Space. As a Space organizer, you can schedule a Space, share, mute speakers, remove and block speakers, end a Space, and more. The host can even mute all speakers at once. Twitter also plans to introduce the ability to have a co-host for Twitter Spaces in the future.
While Twitter Spaces are limited to 10 speakers (excluding hosts), there is no limit to the number of listeners that can join the Space. If you’ve joined the Twitter Space as a listener, but you want to voice your opinion on that topic, you’ll have to request permission to be a speaker.
You can do this by tapping the “Request” button located under your microphone. Only the organizer can give you the option to be a Space speaker.
Marked spaces are not yet available on Twitter, but Twitter plans to introduce the feature soon. They refer to a useful system for Twitter Space servers. Specifically, hosts will be able to sell tickets for their Twitter Spaces. The majority of ticket income will go to the host, but Twitter will also receive a small portion of the revenue.
Space organizers not only sell tickets, but can also determine ticket prices, as well as the number of tickets available. However, not all servers are eligible to be Ticket Spaces servers. Furthermore, only a small number of successful and prominent hosts can host Ticketed Spaces.
If you’re using Twitter, there’s no reason not to take advantage of Twitter’s latest feature. Listening and joining Twitter Spaces will allow you to voice your opinion, meet interesting people, and learn something new. It will also help you grow your Twitter platform and audience until you too can become a host of Twitter Space.
